About Cookie Information
Cookie Information is a consent management platform launched in 2017 that helps organizations collect and manage user consent for cookies and tracking technologies. Based in Copenhagen, Denmark, the company has experienced significant growth, becoming the second-largest third-party service on Denmark's top 100 websites by 2021, second only to Google. The platform operates as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution, with data centers located within the EU.
We tried out Cookie Information on our test website, which includes youtube and tiktok videos, twitter (x.com) and Google Maps embeds.
What does Cookie Information do?
The platform provides tools for collecting user consent on both websites and mobile applications while ensuring compliance with privacy regulations including GDPR, PECR, and UK GDPR. It performs regular scans of websites to detect cookies and tracking technologies, with customizable scan frequencies that can be set to daily or weekly intervals. The system stores all consent data within EU/EEA borders and includes features for geotargeting, allowing organizations to display different consent banners based on users' geographic locations.
Cookie Information integrates with major marketing and analytics platforms, notably serving as a certified Google CMP Partner with native integration for Consent Mode v2. The platform includes implementation options through direct script installation, Google Tag Manager templates, and WordPress plugins. For data security, the service employs 256-bit AES encryption for data at rest and secure HTTP (TLS/HTTPS) for data transmissions, maintaining a stated 99.5% monthly uptime.
Our Cookie Information Review and Testing
Sign up requires an email address and phone number, but no credit card details.
The site set up was simple, and it allows to set cookie scanning either weekly (free plan) or daily (paid plans). We set up the banner with English as the main language, and 3 additional languages. From here it took us to a dashboard where we could:
- Edit the domains and their cookie scan depth (default 5000) and frequency
- Customize the pop up (html css and javascript), with many default templates to choose from
- Edit text for the consent pop up, Cookie Policy, Privacy Policy and the cookie Categories (default = Necessary, Functional, Statistical, Marketing, Unclassified)
- A setting to 'Push for Consent' - for 'consent when you’ve made changes to the Consent solution that requires you to collect new consent for all visitors, including recurring visitors'
- A toggle for first party cookie blocking to block cookies on the root domain by default
- The javascript code with the embed script, which has to be included on all pages
There is a menu for 'Mobile Consent Solution' - for consent with mobile apps. This is a seperate module which currently costs 1,500 per app.
Finally there is a link to an 'Executive Summary' Dashboard (screenshots in the gallery below). It appears to be an embedded PowerBI dashboard - quite basic but nice, and not something you see on many of the other CMP platforms. It has 8 different tabs, covering topics like 'Consent Insight' and 'Privacy Risks Data'. The data did not appear to flow in real time after we had sent some test traffic to out site, perhaps there is a bit of a delay or a regular batch process to reload the reporting data.
Once we added the script to our test site it worked straight away - with a modal popup that blocked the screen before clicking a user option. It had just been about 5 - 10 minutes but we were pleasantly surprised that it had already scanned the website and categorised the cookies it found with no work at all on our side. After clicking 'Reject All' it did appear to be blocking third party cookies from Google Maps and Twitter, but still seemed to let one through from TikTok and several from Youtube.
What makes Cookie Information different?
Cookie Information has an extensive banner customization capabilities, allowing modifications through JavaScript, CSS, and HTML - a feature not universally available among consent management platforms. The service supports 44 languages and includes subdomains in its base offering, which can be significant for organizations managing multiple web properties.
The platform's technical infrastructure utilizes cloud services with redundant storage configurations and daily backups to encrypted, geo-redundant storage. It employs load balancing, automatic scaling, and self-healing components to maintain service availability. The system provides both basic consent rate statistics and advanced reporting capabilities, enabling organizations to monitor and analyze their consent collection processes.
Use cases and industries
Cookie Information targets several specific user groups: web and marketing agencies managing websites and analytics for clients, website owners requiring consent management solutions, and marketing teams needing to ensure GDPR compliance. The platform offers different service tiers based on consent volume and subpage count, with plans ranging from Essential to Professional and Managed Compliance options.
The service has expanded its capabilities through strategic developments, including a 2022 acquisition of the Danish privacy startup Phinder and a 2023 merger with Polish analytics platform Piwik PRO. In 2024, they launched Sheltr, a sub-brand focused on making digital rights protection more accessible. The platform maintains pricing structures that vary based on factors including monthly consent collection volume and the number of subpages being scanned.
